Born in 1980 in Shrimadhopur (Sikar), Rajasthan, Gourishankar Soni received his diploma in Drawing and Painting from the Rajasthan School of Art, Jaipur, in 2000, and later completed his M.F.A. in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Rajasthan University, in 2003.  Rajasthan's royal heritage greatly influence his emotions, as he has been fascinated by iconic Indian architecture since childhood. The unique shapes of windows and doors from various historical buildings, such as Hawa Mahal, Shekhawati Havelis, and palaces, have captivated his imagination. Gourishankar transforms these captivating doors and windows into square, rectangular, and circular openings in his artworks—openings that connect and communicate with the world outside, much like the windows from his favorite buildings.  Gourishankar creates a monochromatic background for his human figure subjects. These backgrounds are then textured with a variety of symbols, characters, and signs influenced by different cultural elements. His subjects—human figures in various postures and everyday objects such as chairs, bells, musical instruments, etc.—are depicted peeping out of the windows in contrasting tones, adding a pop of color to the monochromatic settings.  The artist has showcased his art at numerous group and solo exhibitions in various Indian and international galleries, including the prestigious Lalit Kala Academy at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur; NCPA, Mumbai; Rang Malhaar Art Festival, Jaipur, etc. He has also received awards from the prestigious Lalit Kala Academy, All India Fine Art and Craft Society, and Rajasthan Lalit Kala Academy.
