Kanchan Chander was born in 1957 in New Delhi.She studied Printmaking & Painting at Art Colleges -New Delhi, Santiago (Chile), KunstHochSchule,Berlin, and Ecole Des Beaux Arts,Paris.Her fathers diplomatic postings took her to countries across the globe which exposed her to Art and Culture. Kanchan’s global recognition is mirrored by the range of global collections that acquired her works at National Gallery Modern Art, Delhi; Mumbai International Airport;Kiran Nadar Museum,New Delhi;Lawrence Gallery,Santiago; College of Art, Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi;Chandigarh Museum;British Museum,Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Ecole Des Beaux Arts, Paris;Fukuoka Art Museum- Japan;Glenberra Museum, Japan;Museum of Sacred Arts, Durbuy,Belgium;Air India;Delhi Art Gallery; Art Heritage, New Delhi;Arts Acre Foundation,Kolkatta;Private collections in India and abroad. She has had several solo exhibitions and numerous significant group exhibitions all over the world. She received the International Print Biennale Award Bardford,UK in 1986. Her works are a variety in itself.From Painting Oils and Acrylics on canvases to Printmaking (Etching ,Lithography and Woodcut)-to Sculpting in Fibre Glass and Steel Kanchan has lately ventured into Mixed Media and Video Art.Her approach towards Sculpting is very Contemporary.In her Mixed Medias she embellishes these with immense intricacy.The process of which she finds very therapic. Her Paintings are quite autobiographical at times venturing into themes of “Devis”-the Indian Goddesses. For her “Torsos” she is fascinated by Indian Temple Sculptures and the Hollywood-Bollywood Icons/legends and especially the Tragic Queens.The female form in her painting (divine or earthly) have an ambiguous relationship with power, violence, sensuality, and one another.Themes are very often also derived from Indian Mythology.
